The Moroccan Sahara is magical year-round — but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons. Whether you dream of golden dunes under a blazing sun or sleeping under a crisp winter sky packed with stars, timing your visit right makes all the difference.

🌸 Spring (March–May) — The Golden Window

Spring is arguably the best time to visit. Daytime temperatures sit comfortably between 22–30°C, nights are pleasantly cool, and after winter rains, the desert edges burst with wildflowers. The dunes of Erg Chebbi look their most photogenic in the soft spring light. This is peak season for camel treks and sandboarding — book early.

☀️ Summer (June–August) — For the Brave

Summer means extreme heat — daytime temperatures in Merzouga can reach 45°C or higher. Most travellers avoid July and August, but if you visit, the dunes are beautifully empty. Plan all activities for early morning and after sunset. Nights remain warm but stargazing is exceptional. Hydration and a good camp with AC are non-negotiable.

🍂 Autumn (September–November) — Second Best Season

As temperatures begin to drop after the summer peak, autumn offers nearly perfect conditions. October and November are especially popular — warm days (25–35°C), cool nights, and fewer crowds than spring. The light turns golden and amber, perfect for photography.

❄️ Winter (December–February) — Stars and Silence

Winter is the most underrated time to visit. Days are mild (15–22°C), nights can be cold (sometimes near 0°C near the dunes), and the Milky Way is strikingly clear. The desert is peaceful, uncrowded, and deeply atmospheric. Pack warm layers for the evenings.

🏔 The High Atlas — Tizi n'Tichka Pass

The journey begins with a dramatic climb through the High Atlas Mountains via Tizi n'Tichka, Morocco's highest road pass at 2,260 metres. Snow-capped peaks in winter, wildflowers in spring — this is already worth the trip before you've reached the desert.

🏯 Aït Benhaddou — UNESCO World Heritage Stop

Just before Ouarzazate, stop at Aït Benhaddou — a stunning fortified ksar listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It served as a film set for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Walk the ramparts at golden hour for extraordinary views.

🌴 Draa Valley — Morocco's Largest Palm Grove

South of Ouarzazate, the Draa Valley stretches for over 200 kilometres — a lush river oasis flanked by thousands of date palms, ancient mud-brick villages, and dramatic rock formations. Stop at Agdz for mint tea with a local family.

🏜 Merzouga & Erg Chebbi — The Sahara

The dunes of Erg Chebbi rise up to 150 metres high and glow copper and red in the late afternoon sun. 🏕 The Tents — Luxury Meets Authenticity

Modern luxury desert camps are nothing like roughing it. Expect spacious Berber-style tents with real beds, proper mattresses, fine linens, and ensuite bathrooms with hot showers. The exterior is traditional canvas; inside is elegantly decorated with Moroccan lanterns, rugs and cushions.

🍽 The Food — A Feast Under the Stars

Dinner is a full Moroccan spread: harira soup, a mezze of salads, tagine, couscous, Moroccan pastries and Berber tea. Everything is freshly prepared at the camp. Breakfast includes msemen flatbread, honey, olive oil, eggs and coffee as the sun rises over the dunes.

After dinner, the real magic begins. Local Berber musicians gather around the campfire with hand drums and traditional instruments. The rhythm is hypnotic, the firelight flickers on the dunes, and guests often end up dancing in the sand.

🌅 The Morning — Worth Waking Up For

Set your alarm 30 minutes before sunrise. Walk to the top of the nearest dune — 10–15 minutes — and watch the Sahara turn from deep purple to orange to gold. There is no better alarm clock in the world.

The route from Fes to the Sahara is shorter than from Marrakech but no less spectacular. Through the Middle Atlas Mountains, the Ziz Gorges and the vast Erg Chebbi dunes, this journey packs extraordinary diversity into just 3 days.

🏔 Day 1 — Fes through the Middle Atlas

Departing Fes after breakfast, you climb into the Middle Atlas — cedar forests, lakes and Berber mountain villages. Stop in Ifrane, Morocco's alpine village, then continue to the cedar forests of Azrou where wild Barbary macaques roam freely. Overnight in Midelt or Errachidia.

🏜 Day 2 — Ziz Gorges to Merzouga

The Ziz Gorges are jaw-dropping — sheer rock walls with the river below. The Ziz Oasis follows: 20 kilometres of unbroken date palms. Then the landscape shifts to pre-Saharan hammada and suddenly the orange wall of Erg Chebbi rises on the horizon. Camel trek at sunset. Luxury camp. Stars.

🌄 Day 3 — Todra Gorge Option or Return

For 3-day tours: sunrise on the dunes, then return to Fes via a different route. For 4-day tours: continue to the spectacular Todra Gorge — 300-metre-high limestone cliffs — and the Dades Valley before heading to Marrakech. This Fes-to-Marrakech one-way route is our most popular trip.

Sunset camel trek — riding in silence as the dunes turn copper to red to purple. Quad biking — rent a quad and roar across the dunes at speed, great for all skill levels. Sandboarding — climb a dune, slide down fast. Best in the cool morning. Gnawa music night — live drums and traditional instruments around the campfire, guests often end up dancing in the sand.

7–8: Food & Off-Road 🍳🚗

Berber cooking class — make harira, msemen and tagine with a local cook, then eat what you made. 4WD desert drive into the hammada (rocky desert) beyond the dunes — look for 350-million-year-old fossils that the Berber artisans of Merzouga polish and sell.

9–10: Photography & Fossils 📸🔭

Sunrise dune photography — long shadows, perfect silence, extraordinary light. Bring a tripod for golden hour shots. Fossil cooperative visit — the Merzouga region sits on ancient seabed and is one of the richest fossil sites in Africa. A unique souvenir with a half-billion-year backstory.

Packing for the Sahara requires balancing two very different environments: hot desert days and surprisingly cold desert nights. Get this wrong and you'll be uncomfortable. Get it right and you'll be completely free to enjoy every moment.

👗 Clothing — The Layering Rule

The single most important principle: layers. Lightweight loose light-coloured clothing for the day (linen or moisture-wicking), and a fleece or light down jacket for evenings. Nights in winter can drop near 0°C. A pashmina doubles as sun protection and a blanket.

🧣 The Headscarf & Footwear

A light scarf is essential — it protects from sun, keeps sand out in a breeze, and keeps you warm at night around the campfire. For shoes: slip-ons for in-camp, closed trainers for camel treks and dune walking. Don't bring new stiff boots.

🌞 Sun Protection & Health

SPF 50+ sunscreen, polarised sunglasses, and a sun hat. Reapply every 2 hours. Also pack: lip balm (very dry air), personal medications, hand sanitiser, wet wipes and a small first aid kit.

📱 Electronics & Documents

A power bank is essential — charging in the desert is limited. Bring a camera with a good low-light mode for stargazing. A small tripod makes a big difference for night shots. Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) before you leave.
